Home Hardening
Protect What You've Built.
Fire-resistant upgrades and structural fortifications for rural NorCal properties — built to meet current defensible space and ember-resistance standards.
Your First Line of Defense Against Wildfire
In El Dorado and Placer County, wildfire isn't a distant risk — it's a seasonal reality. Home hardening is the process of upgrading your home's most vulnerable points so that embers, radiant heat, and direct flame have fewer ways in. Armstrong's licensed crews handle every phase of the work, from venting and siding to decking and eave enclosures, so your property meets current CAL FIRE and insurance standards.
Home Hardening
Ember-Resistant Venting
Attic, crawl space, and foundation vents are one of the most common ember entry points during a wildfire. We replace standard vents with ember-resistant models that meet or exceed CAL FIRE guidelines — a critical upgrade that most insurance carriers now require.
Home Hardening
Non-Combustible Siding & Exterior Cladding
Wood and vinyl siding ignite quickly under radiant heat and direct flame. We install LP Smart Siding and Cornerstone cement panels for manufactured home skirting replacement — dramatically reducing your home's ignition risk while maintaining the look you want.
Home Hardening
Eave & Soffit Enclosures
Open eaves are a direct pathway for embers into your attic. We enclose open eaves and soffits with non-combustible materials, eliminating one of the most dangerous vulnerabilities on rural homes.
Home Hardening
Deck & Patio Hardening
Combustible decks act as fuel platforms that can carry fire directly to your home's structure. We replace or retrofit existing decks with composite or non-combustible decking, and address the gap between the deck and the house — a known ember trap.
Home Hardening
Defensible Space & Fuel Breaks
Defensible space is the buffer between your structure and the wildland fuel that surrounds it. Armstrong crews establish and maintain all three CAL FIRE clearance zones — from gravel and non-combustible ground cover at the structure to professionally reviewed fuel breaks at the outer perimeter.
CAL FIRE Clearance Zones
Three Zones. One Integrated Plan.
Armstrong establishes and documents every clearance zone in a single scope of work — from the gravel at your foundation to the forester-reviewed fuel break at the outer perimeter.
Immediate — Gravel & Non-Combustible
The area immediately surrounding your structure is cleared of all combustible vegetation and ground cover. Gravel, decomposed granite, and non-combustible materials replace wood mulch and dry vegetation — eliminating the ember landing zone closest to your home.
- Gravel and DG ground cover installation
- Removal of combustible mulch and vegetation
- Non-combustible hardscape at foundation perimeter
0–100 ft — Defensible Space
CAL FIRE requires 100 feet of cleared and maintained defensible space around all structures in high fire hazard severity zones. Armstrong crews clear, limb, and space vegetation to reduce fire intensity and slow flame spread toward the structure.
- 100 ft cleared and maintained perimeter
- Ladder fuel removal and limbing
- Vegetation spacing per CAL FIRE PRC 4291
100–300 ft — Fuel Reduction & Forester Breaks
Beyond the 100 ft zone, Armstrong installs CAL FIRE-compliant 150 ft fuel reduction and professionally forester-reviewed fuel breaks out to 300 ft. A licensed professional forester reviews and documents the outer break — a requirement for many insurance carriers and CAL FIRE compliance programs.
- 150 ft CAL FIRE fuel reduction zone
- 300 ft fuel break — coordinated with a licensed professional forester
- Forester review documentation provided
